Flushing Tank Heater
One of the most common questions we are asked is, “If I drain my tank water heater will it help extend the life? The answer is YES. It is important, however, to do it correctly. What most people think of as draining their water heater is actually flushing it. Pictured is a State, electric tank water heater. Your water heater may be taller and thinner, or it may be shorter and fatter. Your heater may be an electric, an LP or Natural gas tank water heater. The principles and steps outlined below are exactly the same.
- Turn off the power source (Gas or Electric)
- Attach a hose to the drain at the bottom of the heater.
(Do not turn off the water coming to the heater)
- Turn on the drain you attached the hose to.
- Let the water run until it runs cold plus 10 minutes.
- Turn off drain valve the hose is attached to.
- Remove the hose from the drain.
- Run water from any faucet on the hot side.
(Run water until you have a solid stream of water)
- Turn the power source (Gas or Electric) back on.
- Wait one hour before enough hot water to shower.
