Water Heater Changes

NAECA  What is it?

The National Appliance Energy Conservation ACT (NAECA)

The National Appliance Energy Conservation Act (NAECA) is a U.S. federal law enacted in 1987 that sets minimum energy efficiency standards for household appliances, including water heaters, refrigerators, dishwashers, and air conditioners. The goal of NAECA is to reduce energy consumption, lower utility costs for consumers, and decrease environmental impact by ensuring appliances meet stricter efficiency requirements.

The 2015 Update:

In May of 2015 the update required tank water heaters to be more efficient by using better insulation, heat pumps and condensing technology.  As many of you know, the 80 gallon residential tank water heater you wanted to replace in your home was no longer available in a residential model.  To replace this heater we had to go to a 80 gallon light commercial unit.  The 40/50 gallon tall and 40/50 gallon standard tank water heater could be replaced, but in many cases would not fit in the same location as the water heaters were manufactured with more insulation which made them a little taller and and little bigger around.

The 2029 Update:

In May of 2029 the 40/50 gallon water heater in your home will no longer be available to replace.  The 2029 standards will mandate heat pumps for larger electric models (over 35 gallons) and higher efficiency ratings (condensing models) for gas water heaters.  Bottom line, the 40/50 gallon tank water heater is going away.      As your water heater ages, and it’s time to replace, now is the time to start getting out ahead of this and start thinking about updating to condensing tankless.  From the meetings and zoom calls I have attended, it has become apparent that as the inventory of tank water heaters begins to decrease, the more they will cost until they are no longer in inventory.  Even if you do replace the tank water heater you have, the average life span is 10 – 12 years.  At that point you will be out of options.  If you would like to learn more, you can reach out to us for a free in home meeting to discuss your options.
